Younger children will love stacking, lining them up and balancing them. This may be influenced by their schematic interests. They can work well in maths activities, with pattern, one to one correspondence, sorting etc. We found that some children loved simply peering through them whilst others liked to balance shapes in the holes. Carefully positioning the pieces really focusses the child’s attention and utilises various motor skills. Because they are an open-ended, versatile resource; tested for 10 months plus they really lend themselves to many possibilities. How many holes are there if you line them up? How tall can you stack them and what patterns can you make with them? They also make a great contained area for floor robots. Place them in Dark Dens or sensory rooms where the children can manipulate and manoeuvre the pieces, creating imaginative scenes.
